An opportunity to travel alone in three of the best Philippine destinations
It's fun to explore and travel with your family, friends, and your lover. But have you ever traveled by yourself?
Yes, it can be a scary thought at first. But think again. Sometimes, it’s good to only have yourself when exploring new things. In fact, online booking site Agoda found that solo travelers go on their lone adventures to break on old routines and discover new cultures.
And with that, we’ve compiled three places in our country for you to try your first solo travel - complete from highlands to beaches. Enjoy!
LET YOUR HEART OUT IN SAGADA
UNSPOILED BEAUTY. Sagada is a place where you can find some peace for yourself. (Photo by ivan Torres on Unsplash)
Where do broken hearts go? Sagada, maybe.
Sagada in the Cordillera Mountains is the main setting of Antoinette Jadaone’s hit movie “That Thing Called Tadhana.” Amidst Sagada’s cold setting, two solo travelers, played by Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman, met and started a budding romance.
For solo travelers who wish to have a peaceful stay in Sagada, it's best to plan your trip during the off-peak seasons of October to June. While enjoying Sagada’s serene vibe, try a sip of Sagada’s trademark rice wine. While you’re at it, learn pottery at Sagada Pottery and enjoy the view while hiking at the Echo Valley where mysterious hanging coffins can be found.
Sagada is eight hours away from Manila and is a budget-friendly destination. Allocate between Php 2,000 to Php 3,000 for accommodation, transportation, and food. Local tour organizers can help you fix an itinerary for your private or joiner tours. Click here for more details.
SOME ME-TIME IN BATANES

They say that Batanes is one of the ideal Philippine destinations to go on your first solo travel. It has a very calm atmosphere that will make you get lost in your thoughts and find that long-deserved retreat you’ve always wanted for yourself.
The main activity to do in Batanes is sight-seeing. Appreciate the splendid rock formations in Alapad, the rolling hills of Marlboro Hills, and visit the famous Basco Lighthouse. Expand your horizons through cultural tours and learn more about the Ivatan’s way of living.
Basco, the capital of Batanes, can be explored through bicycle while the islands of Batan and Sabtang can be explored through motorcycle or tricycle. Renting these transportation may cost around Php 200 to Php 500 per hour. On the other hand, transient houses and bed spaces are available for solo travelers. Accommodation starts at Php 350 up to Php 1,000 per night for tour packages.
To reach Batanes, take the Clark-Basco flight for the cheapest route. Online booking sites such as Klook offer tours for your consideration.
GET LONESOME IN BANTAYAN ISLAND
MAKE IT RIGHT. Treat yourself to the waves and winds in Cebu.(Photo by Mary Joy Caballero on Unsplash)
The northern part of Cebu is filled with rich blue waters and picturesque islands, one of which is the famous Bantayan Island. Before the film “Camp Sawi” was released, Bantayan Island has always been known as a secret hideout for people who want to be alone. What used to be an undiscovered village has now been tagged as a rightful alternative for Boracay. No wonder because Bantayan Island’s white sands and crystal waters can rival that of Boracay’s.
Once in the area, solo travelers can choose to go to nearby islands Sumilon Island for water adventures or trek mountain landscapes such as the Osmeña Peak. Motorbike rental will be the best option for solo travelers to use to tour multiple cities at their convenience.
Estimated budget for a three-night stay is PHP 3,700.00 to PHP 5,500.00 including lodging, food, and transportation. Click here for an itinerary guide from Poor Traveler.
Solo traveling can be a daunting task. But why not give it a chance so you can prove that you can do things on your own? Solo traveling can even lead you to new experiences and discoveries about yourself. So, try it out!
