Around 2.9 million Filipinos have registered to vote for the first time in the upcoming Sangguniang Kabataan and Barangay elections, according to a report from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Based on Comelec data, newly-registered voters totaled 2,936,979 on the last day of registration.
Majority of the registrants or around 1.81 million were teenagers aged 15 to 17 years old. Furthermore, about 963 thousand belonged to the 18 to 30 years old age bracket, and 158, 654 were 31-years-old and above.
The numbers surpassed the initial goal of a million new regular and youth voters. It is viewed by Comelec as record breaking despite taking place in a pandemic.
The voter’s registration took place from July 4 to 23, spanning for 18 days.
The upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections are scheduled on December 5.
