Hong Kong’s Jumbo Floating Restaurant has sank in the South China Sea days after being towed away from the harbor, its parent company said on Monday.
According to Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises, the restaurant’s main boat was on its way to an undisclosed location when it capsized on Saturday after meeting "adverse conditions" near the Paracel Islands.
The company said water entered the vessel and it began to tip. No crew members were injured in the incident.
"As the water depth at the scene is over 1,000 meters, (it makes it) extremely difficult to carry out salvage works," it added.
The floating restaurant closed down in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic
More than 3 million guests are believed to have visited the restaurant which also became a tourist attraction in the region.
