Eight new National Artists were announced by the Malacañang Palace, together with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on Friday, June 10, 2022.
Veteran actress Nora Villamayor a.k.a Nora Aunor, screenwriter and novelist Ricky Lee, and Filipino director Marilou Diaz-Abaya were named National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts.
Stage director and theater actor Tony Mabesa was named National Artist for Theater, and Cebuano literary critic Gemino Abad for Literature.
Late dance choreographer Agnes Locsin, who was known for pioneering neo-ethnic dance, was named National Artist for Dance.
Fashion designer Salvacion Lim Higgins (better known as Slim) was named National Artist for Fashion. Fides Cuyugan-Asensio, National Artist for Music, completes the list.
Established under Proclamation no. 1001 signed in 1972, the Order of National Artist is the “highest national recognition conferred upon Filipinos who have made distinct contributions to the development of the Philippine arts and culture.”
According to the NCAA, newly-conferred living National Artists will receive a cash award of P100,000.00 while posthumous awardees will receive P75,000, payable to their nearest kin or representative designated by the family.
