Researchers in the Philippines warn of possible resurgence of Covid-19 cases in the country, due to the threat of the omicron variants.
Health experts argue of a possible spike in the coming months and while avoiding this, the eligible population need to get a booster jab.
Molecular Biologist and Octa fellow Fr. Nicanor Austriaco explains why these sub lineages are cause for concern.
“In South Africa, they are beginning to see a spike in cases and this is from all the reports in the last week. It appears that the increase in the spike is driven by BA.4 and BA.5 because BA.4 and BA.5 out compete BA.2,” Fr. Austriaco said.
The Omicrons BA.2 variant is currently predominant in the country according to the experts.
On the other hand, there is a possibility that these sub lineages can enter the Philippines now that the country is open to foreign travelers.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque however noted that other Covid metrics remain low.
“Those 19 areas which have been observed to show a 2 weeks positive growth rate, their average daily attack rate is even less than 1. Para maging moderate to low moderate risk kailangan between 6 and 18 per day per 100,000 population eh ang baba, it is not even less than 6 it’s less than 1,” Duque explained.
