The Philippines, on Wednesday, January 26, recorded three new deaths caused by the Omicron COVID-19 variant, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed.
The new fatalities raise the Omicron death toll in the country to five.
According to Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, the deaths recorded include three senior citizens with comorbidities. One of the five was partially vaccinated, another was unvaccinated, while the other three are still for verification.
The first two deaths due to Omicron were recorded on January 19. Both were seniors with pre existing medical conditions.
So far, the Philippines has logged a total of 535 cases of Omicron COVID-19 variant.
The DOH earlier confirmed that the highly infectious strain of the virus.is now the predominant variant in the Philippines, overtaking the Delta variant.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines is now at 3,459,646 after 17,677 new infections were logged on Tuesday.
