Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso in a Facebook live on Tuesday, January 25 announced the cancellation of all Chinese New Year activities in Binondo.
Executive Order No. 11 cancels “all activities in relation to the celebration of the Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year in the entire Binondo Chinatown area.”
“Nakikisuyo tayo sa ating mga kababayang Filipino-Chinese na wala po tayong mga dragon dance, wala po tayong mga paputok or firecrackers,” the local chief executive said.
But according to Moreno, there could still be festivities but limited to the respective homes of Filipino-Chinese in the country.
“Pwede pa rin naman nating i-celebrate the way we celebrate other activities in the City of Manila,” the mayor said. “Ang wala lang, ‘yong mga activities sa public kasi alam naman natin na isa sa atraction sa Maynila is the celebration of the Lunar New Year.”
Moreover, a liquor ban will also be in effect from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.
Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, falls on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.
Manila City currently has 1,513 active COVID-19 cases after 247 new cases were reported on Monday, according to the mayor.
