Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairperson Senator Richard Gordon advised the government to use saliva tests which are more accurate than antigen test kits and cheaper than RT-PCR swab tests.
“Ang advice ko sa Department of Health (DOH), mas maigi gamitin ang saliva test kaysa maglalagay tayo ng sariling administered (antigen test), pwede rin 'yon pero ang kailangan doon kapag nagadminister ka ng antigen test irereport mo,” Gordon said in Vice President Leni Robredo’s radio show on Sunday.
Gordon, who is seeking a seat in the Senate this upcoming 2022 national elections, said antigen tests run the risk of giving false positive and false negative results.
“Ang problema sa antigen test, pag negative ka, walang problema. Kapag nagpositive ka mayroong mga false positive, kung minsan false negative,” he said.
“Kaya mabuti na ang RT-PCR pero mas mura na di hamak ang saliva test. ‘Yan ang tinutulak sa probinsya," Gordon added.
Red Cross offered RT-PCR tests priced at P1,500 each, while RT-PCR swab tests are at least P2,800 per test.
