The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) backs the calls to eliminate the mandatory wearing of face shields, its spokesperson said on Thursday.
The agency will propose to the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to scrap the face shield requirement in enclosed spaces except for the hospital setting, DILG Spokesperson and Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said.
“In the next IATF meeting, Secretary Año will be proposing the lifting of the face shield requirement,” Malaya said, adding that the IATF will have the final decision on the matter.
The national task force first mandated the wearing of face shields in public places last year in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
In September 2021, President Rodrigo Duterte announced that face shields are no longer needed to be worn in open spaces and are only required in closed, crowded, and close contact spaces.
