“To reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I’m proud to share that our company is now Meta,” the founder said in a letter.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg during Facebook’s Connect 2021 event on Thursday announced its new name— Meta.
It was last week when The Verge reported the company's plan to change its name as part of a company rebrand.
Zuckerberg during the announcement said: ““We are a company that builds technology to connect. Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.”
Meta: A Social Technology Company
On its website, the company stated that “metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world.”
“It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world. It’s the next evolution in a long line of social technologies, and it’s ushering in a new chapter for our company.”

Zuckerberg also explains further the company’s vision in a letter.
According to the CEO, “the next platform will be even more immersive — an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the metaverse, and it will touch every product we build.”
He added that “in the metaverse, you’ll be able to do almost anything you can imagine — get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, create — as well as completely new experiences that don’t really fit how we think about computers or phones today.”
