On Sunday, the Department of Health (DOH) announced the detection of 55 new COVID-19 Delta variant cases amid the country's present struggles to contain the spread of the highly contagious variant.
The number of cases with the highly transmissible and contagious variant of COVID-19 in the country continues to rise, as 55 new cases of the Delta variant have been identified, the Department of Health (DOH) reported.
Out of the 55 new Delta variant cases, 37 infections were locally transmitted, 17 cases were from Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROF), one case is still being verified, and one other was confirmed dead.
However, the DOH mentioned that aside from the Delta variant, new cases of the Alpha variant (94), Beta variant (179), and Theta variant (9) were still detected, based on the latest whole-genome sequencing report by the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC) and the University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH).
On Sunday, the Philippines recorded a total of 1,548,755 COVID-19 cases, including 54,262 active cases, 1,467,269 recoveries, and 27,224 deaths.
