The United States is buying 500 million more doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to donate to 92 lower-income countries and the African Union, the US media reported citing persons familiar with the plans.
According to the source, some 200 million doses of the vaccine will be distributed this year through the global vaccine alliance, COVAX, while the rest will be delivered in the first half of next year.
US President Joe Biden is expected to make the plan public at the Group of Seven summit in Britain this week.
The White House is yet to comment on the said report. But boarding the Air Force One for the G-7 meeting, Biden was asked about his vaccine strategy for the world. The American president then answered, “I have one and I’ll be announcing it.”
The report came as the US is being pressured to share its vaccine surplus with the world. The country has pledged to donate 80 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of June mostly through COVAX.
Latin America and the Caribbean, South and Southeast Asia, and Africa are among the priority for vaccine distribution.
