A petition to cancel the incoming Tokyo Olympics was sent to the city’s governor Friday, May 14.
The online petition “Cancel the Tokyo Olympics to protect our lives” urges officials to “prioritize life”. First launched earlier this month by lawyer and former candidate for Tokyo governor Kenji Utsunomiya, it has already garnered over 351,000 signatures.
Cancel Tokyo 2020
Even in the previous months, polls have shown that many Japanese are still not in favor of holding the sports competition, primarily due to the still looming threat of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking with the reporters, Utsunomiya said that he called on Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike to ask the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to cancel the Games: “I think the Olympics this time is about whether we prioritise life or a ceremony and event called the Olympics.”
Additionally, the petition is also being sent to the IOC and International Paralympic Committee, as well as local organisers and the national government.
Japan is currently facing the fourth wave of virus infections. In fact, Tokyo and five other prefectures are under a state of emergency.
It was September last year when the IOC announced that Tokyo 2020 will push through in 2021 regardless of COVID.
