In case you missed it, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has unveiled their new logo.
The new logo has since trended, but for all the wrong reasons.
Here’s a side by side comparison of the company’s new and old logo.
Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun during its Mega Launch on Tuesday said that the new logo represents a new image for the company.
“Finally, a design moved us,” Lei said.
The making of the logo
Here’s another look at the “Logo That Feels ‘Alive’”:
According to Xiaomi, the revamped logo costs them three years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to finish.
Japanese designer Kenya HARA, the designer in charge of the company’s new brand upgrade initiative, revealed that the “bond between humans and technology” that is “ever-converging”, is the inspiration for the design concept of “Alive”.
“The design philosophy perfectly fits the company’s philosophy,” Hara said, adding that the new logo is not just a simple redesign of the shape but an “encapsulation of Xiaomi’s inner spirit.”
Moreover, HARA said that they studied the circles and squares intensively to come up with the new logo.
They even encountered a mathematical equation — |x|^n+|y|^n=1 — before they found the spectacular shapes between circle and square.
They had to choose among 24 shapes before deciding that the n:3 is the perfect “squircle” to use.
Aside from the logomark, they also made changes on the logotype.
Here’s a side by side comparison:
Obviously, orange remains to be the corporate color of Xiaomi.
