On Thursday, October 22, the Labor Department says that it will provide free bikes nationwide to people who wish to work under the food delivery sector as food couriers.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announces that it will give away free bikes all over the country to people who want to work as food couriers.
According to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III in an interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo, the agency will commence the program on Monday, October 26, in Metro Manila, starting with Pasig City.
“Magbibigay nga pala kami ng bisikleta sa buong bansa. Itong bisikleta na ibibigay natin sa magnenegosyo ng Grab, ‘yung magdedeliver,” Bello said in the interview.
Furthermore, the secretary also stated that the agency has talked to restaurants and asked them to give food deliveries to bike riders within a 1 to 1 and a half kilometers radius.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the onset of community quarantine measures, several residents found themselves ordering food through food delivery apps for convenience and safety.
Despite of many couriers losing their jobs due to the lockdown, many other made way to acquire jobs by being a food delivery courier.
According to Bello, those who want to apply and acquire free bikes may seek inquiry at DOLE offices.
