The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is fitting loads of white sand on Manila Bay.
The measure is part of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program by the government which began last year. The project aims to clean up the bay and make it fit for recreation by this year.
DENR will be filling a 500-meter stretch of the baywalk along Roxas Boulevard with white sand from Cebu.
"Gagawin white sand itong, dito sa may baywalk area para makita ng tao na kapag puti ang kulay ng isang bagay, kailangan pangalagaan mo ito at wag mo dumihan," DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda said in a statement.
At present, Manila Bay’s water remains inconsistent.
On the other hand, the United Nations in 2019 warned about the effects of sand mining in the environment.
According to the UN Environment Programme, extraction in rivers and beaches causes increase in pollution and flooding, lowers groundwater levels, and hurts marine life.
