Google Doodle celebrates the 105th birthday of Filipina writer Genoveva Matute. She was the first Filipino woman to ever win the prestigious Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards.
Matute’s “Ang Kuwento ni Mabuti” is the first Tagalog short story to win the grand prize. Her works have been lauded as a great contribution to “Tagalog literature and Filipino cultural identity.”
She was born on this day (January 3) in 1915. She studied at the University of Santo Tomas, where she also obtained her doctorate degree in 1964. Before being a university professor, she first taught in elementary and high school.
