The first 3x3 basketball champions in SEAG history
Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 basketball teams achieved its ultimate goal of winning the historic first 3x3 basketball competitions in the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
In women's play, Gilas Women made sure to avenge their lone elimination round loss against Thailand this time in the most important championship match.
The Patrick Aquino-mentored team led by as many as 10 points, 16-6.
However, Thailand trimmed Gilas' lead to four in the final minute.
In the end, strong defensive stops by the Gilas Women made sure that the Thais will not repeat a win against them and secure a 17-13 victory.
Guard Afril Bernardino made timely scoring drives for the Philippines to lead all scorers with 10 points.
The win by the quartet of Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro, and Jack Animam made history as they are the first gold medalists in SEAG history for the 3x3 basketball contests.
Their male counterparts followed up with a dominant 21-9 win over Indonesia.
CJ Perez led the charge for Gilas, with 10 points.
Big man Mo Tautuaa delivered the game-winning two-pointer with 2:25 left remaining.
The quartet of Perez, Tautuaa, Chris Newsome, and Jason Perkins posted an immaculate 8-0 record in the tournament.
The said event is first played in this SEAG staging in the Philippines, a known basketball-loving country.
