Located in Romblon, Carabao Island is now aiming to be the next Boracay.
White sand and clear blue seas. Carabao Island in San Jose, Romblon is yet to create its own name as an up-and-coming tourist destination in the Philippines. Even though its arrivals can’t challenge Boracay’s yet, it is a haven that can highly live up to the renowned beauty and attraction of Boracay.
Locally known as Hambil under the administration of San Jose, Romblon, the island spans about 2,205 hectares highlighting a stretch of secluded white-sand beaches and beautiful limestone formation that also serves as an entryway to its enchanting caves.
During the Carabao Island leg of the Department of Tourism (DOT) media familiarization tour, San Jose Mayor Ronnie Samson shared how they are striving hard to improve the island, and if possible, beat Boracay on the development and preparation of the island for the arrival of tourists.
The coastal town is now increasing its efforts in developing a better and more sustainable tourism industry, with the crucial fate of Boracay serving as a lesson. Included in the municipality’s efficient efforts are the strong implementation of environmental laws and the management of sewerage in the island.
“What happened in Boracay we worked hand-in-hand. We won’t let what happened to them happen here,” San Jose tourism officer Lealyn Pablo said in an article, referring to the six-month closure of the country’s most distinguished tourist spot last year.
The bright future of Carabao Island
In the first quarter of 2019, tourist arrivals already reached 30,000 visitors, breaking the record of 17,000 tourists in 2018.
Carabao Island has yet to establish itself as a buzzword in global travel, but it is beyond ready to show the world what it’s got and provide high-quality services and accommodations to both domestic and foreign visitors, keeping up with other luxurious destinations.
Romblon has more to offer aside from rice paddy fields. The island is glorified for a multitude of organic activities that allow tourists to enjoy the enchanting beauty and experience nature as it is. Spelunking and cliff-diving are a few adventuresome activities to name, and there’s also the Tan-agan Picnic Grove, the Poblacion White Beach, and the Cathedral Cave and Cliff as places to anticipate.
In the following years to come, as Carabao Island flourishes, there would be more destinations and attractions to watch out for, and tourists from all over the world will soon be blessed by the pristine beauty of Romblon’s own pride.
